"Rinion's World" playfully combines cartoonish, stylized imagery related to processed food packaging, the digital world, and identity in order to create an imagined, illustrative world that absurdly addresses the lived experiences of Rin Mitchell. Digital social messaging symbols, such as text bubbles, notifications, and cursor arrows, become twisted, intestinal, spiralling, and undulating in order to visually communicate ideas about profuse anxiety, executive dysfunction, and other modern terrors that come about as a result of our increasingly digitized socio-political location. This distinct visual language is then translated to other objects, such as processed snack foods and other consumer goods. Where one is conditioned to expect iconographic brand logos, the artist replaces them with shapes individual to his distinct visual language. Snack foods and other sensationalized consumer goods, like e-cigarettes and iPhones, become motifs for hyper-consumption, bingeing, addictive habits, and vices at large. These ideas become connected through layering techniques, which emphasize the ruminatory nature of obsessive overthought. Physical materials like acrylic paint, oil paint, ink, gouache, crayon, marker, and colored pencil combine on traditional surfaces like canvas and paper to combat digitization. Ironically, visual techniques related to cartoons, animation, and digital symbols are used to maintain a sense of humor and universality. This body of work functions as a mode of processing the modern world, as well as a place in which it can be playfully interrogated and made fun of.
